Independent Medical Examinations

Independent Medical Examinations (referred to as IMEs) are conducted when a doctor examines a patient at the request of a third-party company. The third-party company requests may be for legal, financial or insurance reasons.

During the IME, the examiner will document the history and mechanism of the illness, injury or impairment, as well as prior treatments and present complaints.  The examiner will include details of his/her physical examination of the patient and how it correlates with the patient’s claim. The examiner will express his/her opinion as to the probability the complaint and conditions are a direct result of the occurrences that initiate the claim.

Visiting Specialist Clinics (VSC)

The purpose of the Visiting Specialist Clinics (VSC) is to identify a client’s current medical status and most responsible diagnosis and care pathway. A complete medical history is performed which will include a review of the injury, subsequent testing and a medical examination. If further care is required the examining physician is welcome to continue further investigation and treatment.

Medical Status Examinations

The purpose of the Medical Status Examination (MSE) is to identify a client’s current medical status and concerns. A complete medical history is performed which will include a review of the injury, subsequent testing and a medical examination. 

The MSE report will determine if the mechanism of the client’s injury correlates with the diagnosis. The report will further provide recommendations and direction for further medical investigations, treatments and/or interventions. 

Functional Capacity Evaluations                                                     

Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an assessment of a patient to see if his/her injuries could affect his employment. They are structured to include critical elements. The FCE report is objective, scientific, valid, legally defensible, safe and reliable. The assessment will identify barriers to recovery and appropriate return to work guidelines.    

Pre-Medical Screening for FCEs is also available to evaluate the client’s capability to medically complete the FCE.

Chronology of Case Events                                               

A Chronology of Case Events is a methodical compilation of a client’s medical case events that may be used for judicial and non-judicial settings.

Cost of Future Care                                                                

The purpose of a Cost of Future Care is to identify the needs of the client with varying diagnoses and levels of disability. The report will include current and future care needs (medical, home care and rehabilitation) the client will require.

Document reviews                                            

A Document Review involves a methodical compilation of a client’s medical and surgical history by a Surgical Examiner without examining the client. The Examiner will express his/her opinion as to the probability the complaint and conditions are a direct result of the occurrences that initiate the claim.

Early Intervention & Rehabilitation are Essential Parts of Injury Recovery

Return to Work Programs:

The “Return to Work” Program (RTW) evaluates the steps required for an employee to return to a productive and safe employment. A RTW program develops a joint plan between the client, his employer, the health care provider, the case manager (or union) and rehabilitation services. RTW program will set milestones for the client to achieve until he/she reaches the final goal of returning to the pre-injury employment. The RTW program will identify the actions required to achieve these goals within reasonable time frames. Finally it will identify coordinate the client’s health care needs to ensure continued medical and rehabilitation needs are met.

Work Hardening & Conditioning Evaluations:

The Work Hardening & Conditioning Evaluation program (WHCE) is specifically designed to reproduce movements the client used in his/her work environment. The goal is to teach the client proper body mechanics, and to strengthen the muscles that the client uses predominantly at work. The WHCE will provide the client with goals to return to his/her pre-injury employment.

Work Site Visits:

The purpose of the worksite visit is to maximize an employer’s ability to manage the client’s disability in the workplace. Consulting services help the work team to manage any risks that the client may encounter in the work environment. Cost varies according on the location and the job description.

Home Site Visits:

The purpose is to provide complete in-home assessments. The visit will assess housekeeping, caregiving, and attendant care needs for clients with varying musculoskeletal injuries and deficits. The report will prescribe and educate the client on assistive devices, ADL equipment and energy conservation principles.

For best recovery from injury Medical Legal Assessments are usually combined with physiotherapy or chiropractic treatments.
